The Mini Retirement Era
For almost all of this year, I was able to secure that slow living life, but of course, with a thoroughly planned budget and mindset already set. I feel that this year has gone almost entirely on what my random mind has been missing, like building hobbies I never had the room for. I started random things like building an aquarium, learning archery, designing my own AI agents, exploring local food places, and catching the small things I would otherwise have missed. I even wrote several math books for K-8 that I didn't know I was capable of, at TinyBrain Books. In addition to that, I'm creeping in exploring my super old interest in both physics and art, even though it was too much of work to take back, and I feel too old to consume such large interests lol. Most of the year sounds like a slack, but it has otherwise been healing for me. Actual work that I do to keep my days busy is working in several contractor roles that for some reason tripled my corporate rate in the industry of AI and finance (not surprised) as I have the proper domain expertise, and all work is set at my own time. Other than that, I am back with full access to do investments to my full extent! Although I don't know why my investment approach wasn't as exciting or aggressively driven as before. My investment approach here is just focused on value investing where I find cheap strong companies to buy and forget. I guess this slow mini retirement life has affected the way I think about my investment style.

Meticulous Plan! I Am Settling Life Down in California for Now. But Then the Big Layoff?
This was the year I wanted to really execute that peaceful life that always stayed at the back of my mind. I tried pushing my time on the side to think through this. Until I realized that California truly felt like home after all this time. It is the best balance of my life to truly get settled and live the rest of my energy. With that determination, I meticulously planned every aspect from remote project choices, automating my investments in between my project's strict rules, and even setting how I want to transition realistically back from the fast paced New York to California (spoiler is that slowdown got me in such a peaceful shock later). And for some whatever reason, I got the right opportunity at this right time to work remotely from California to put this idea to the test. A few months in, and I was absolutely in full realization that I felt that peaceful healing that I didn't know I needed. I had lived here all my life, and for some reason I appreciated how great this place was to be in. So I doubled down in making the settled life here into an actual realization. I was able to find that spot in life where my time was perfectly balanced to my world of work, life aspiration, and even an open space to think of new things I want to do. Life was great. Until at the very end of the year my firm had a massive layoff, and I think I was also part of the batch. Hence, I have all my time to myself now as I am thinking about how to make the best out of it, and pushing to that all-automated life.

I Stumbled Badly, but We Gotta Learn From Mistakes and Make Every Ounce of Time Worth It
That big shift in health had me realize in such an open wide eye that high stress level and lack of sleep truly was the place where I was at my limit. I've been repeating the word “max out” for several years until I was faced to learn the hard way that time is not all just to be squeezed empty and dry, but also to be appreciated and valued. As I opened up my time from my job quit, I had the space to start getting to know some people outside work slowly at a pace. I was able to spend the rest of the year in a more significant and valuable use of time balance such as getting involved in becoming a speaker at schools, local programs, or even actually exploring the city myself! I didn't even realize that I hadn't walked a proper breeze in the best city of the world. The point is that I put that time to use, discovering new ways to do more legendary stories of #minumyakulttiaphari. It went even better when most of my work projects were all done remotely, and I was able to even spend more time finding the cool meaning out of a peaceful life. I began my search for every way to construct how exactly we can automate life through various planning such as the early retirement movements, automated businesses, and even finding ways to be fully settled in life. As I lived the best out of life in NYC, this thinking always stayed at the back of my mind of such kind of life.

Beginning the New York Life at Full Speed! The Best Chapter of My Life!
This year perhaps might be the best chapter of my life yet. I started my life all over again, but literally from the very top of the world, New York City. I knew no one, but I had faith that God was always by my side in this journey. I arrived fully prepared, in a very high spirit, money crazed, and determined to accelerate my career in full purposes. From the moment I first set foot in the city, I realized that this city perfectly resembled where my entire energy was. Even when I first started working, I noticed that everyone around me had just the same level of drive as me, all highly achieved, ambitious, etc. Then, I thought to myself: How auspicious...! And in just a quick glimpse into the city's culture, it showed me how fast everything moved, and I knew I was ready to enter the big fast lane. I had only a week to settle in before starting my double jobs, so I had virtually no time for anything else. In banking, I worked with top tier clients full of NDAs, doing the transaction side of investments. And of course, a similar finance-tech focused work on the management consulting side. Also, because of these strict industry rules, I was very limited with all my investments work, because the rule was very clear that everyone should not interfere with personal interest, etc. So, I guess the trade here is that I got to do the transactional work experience from within the industry and connect with legendary people from various different backgrounds. I left most of my investments in a dormant state for the rest of the year, other than my recurring retirement match from my paychecks. Also, I caught a new passion/interest in the world of tech from some of my consulting work, as the industry is moving at a super fast pace to develop AI, automation, and any other tech infrastructures. I began to think that data is truly the new oil for my generation and I'd make a great story by shifting my experience towards the mixture of finance and tech. No doubt that this will take another toll on my time limit as I am entering a new space, but I was super determined! Hence, all my life was focused solely on work and work only. I'd get super busy hour by hour, including all the cool meetings and fancy travels to client's site, etc. It ended up becoming my life's biggest challenge as I deteriorated in health, lacking in sleep and room to literally do anything else until I dropped Morgan Stanley at the end of the year, because of these health issues.

Everything Is Maxed Out, and Life Is Such a Blessing, but We Have to Leave It All for New York?
Still with all the maxed out life with full vibrant colors, I think this is the year where I truly can harvest all the work I've done. After lots of networking with countless rejections, the strangest thing happened. The random pending application from Morgan Stanley that I didn't even know was considered sent me an offer letter to start working as an analyst, with relocation assistance all the way to the center of the financial hub, New York City. I was so star struck in excitement knowing shortly after that Accenture (who originally rejected one of my online applications) called me, when I was in the middle of a long drive, that the original rejection was an error, and I was instead relocated from the original Los Angeles office to the New York office. Life got me a double shot, and I was truly speechless. In my time of gratefulness, I knew for sure that God was also working in the same exact way as before, which is to leave everything behind again, in order for me to be able to see the other side of me. I thought thoroughly about all the people I've shared my life with, all the many changes that had me progress this far. In the mix of gratefulness, there was also a heavy heart between this time and the day I had to fly to New York. I tried to walk the days like usual, as I was contemplating God's offer that I would never be able to reject. It all shifted slowly in reassurance from all the close people around me, especially my dad who was able to join us again at the end of the year after 5 long years being separated in distance.

Okay, I'm Maxing It Out!
Part of this year still had everyone in a lockdown as the widespread disease slowly faded. The economy was in shambles and everyone felt such a slow downer feeling. And by the time people were progressively allowed to go out, I immediately maxed out everything in life, ignoring the most precious thing that felt cheap to me back then, my health. I used every single moment of my time to be fully utilized. I maxed every aspect of life from career and aspiration, social life, and most importantly, faith! I remember that in parallel, I was able to take 3 full time internships at Bloomberg, Experian, and Jennison Associates from home, while being hyper active socially through college clubs, local friend groups and communities, and churches every single Sunday. My travel outreach was also massive. I called it the holy trinity, LA, OC and SB, traveling almost every single day. The cool moment here is just me printing every single legendary and worthy story in life. Until I realized that I turned out to be an extrovert in hyper explosion after that Covid transition. All in perfectly organized and fast-paced blocks of stories. Except when I visited the ER because of those random chest pain and lack of sleep issues, sigh. Oh also! There was this main highlight on my hatred for the company Snapchat at that time. I was deeply hampered on how the business was run, their ways in managing money, and their product itself, and that was coming from a teenager myself. I put all my money in this one big bet of my life to short their company through “put options” during their earnings report, putting my money where my mouth is. It went down more than 25% in less than an hour.

Covid, Oh Covid
Ah, the big year of 2020. Life started out in such a perfect state for me, especially when I started my third year in college, transferring to Cal State Fullerton. And then boom! All of a sudden Covid spread widely across the world and it all went downhill to just me being contained in my own room for the rest of the year. I even got to be the unlucky one experiencing the near death experience when doctors found out that my lungs were all inflamed as my oxygen level kept going down. But hey, shoutout to all healthcare workers and the progressive technology that the vaccine was delivered in advance, so I was able to recover. The remaining year was just flat. The most interaction there was, was just the phone calls to reach out to those who were dear to us. Luckily, my passion and interest could be done remotely, and this is where I made one of the biggest investment milestones of my life, investing in the company Palantir Technologies. It first came as a random direct listing that nobody knew, but being in my room for such a long time allowed me to do deep research knowing their biggest potential. I placed almost all my portfolio there in such high conviction.

I'm Swamped, Let's Find Some Friends
Work in investments this year accelerated extremely quickly, and all my profit went back reinvested into hundreds of companies that were either a profit-focused purchase, or just plain love and motive toward what they do or produce. Work aside, I realized that as I graduated from community college with double degrees, my life revolved mostly just around studying like crazy or spinning in the world of finance. So, I decided to stack my schedule on experiencing cool things in life, hashtagged with #minumyakulttiaphari. First things first is to find friends. This is where I met the cool bunch of friend group, dabicis. As I transitioned to university, these people were the ones I spent most of my time with, made a bunch of stories, and without realizing, became such close friends.

Just Me and My Brother, but I Got This!
This is the year where I saw some progress in all my work, and no one around me understood what I was doing lol. But behind that, I stayed on top of my grind in the community college, maxed out my contributions at church, and went on a deep dive on all my research. Also, my dad went back to Indonesia this year, so it was just me and my little brother against the world. My financial status here was still fairly broke, but hey, I became an early to mid stage Tesla investor without even realizing that it was a cool thing back then. And I also made several cool investment trades here and there. These major changes were an absolute financial shift in my broke ass life. Then in a couple more trades later, I was able to afford my first car, the legendary Toyota Corolla 2017!

Still Figuring Out, but I Think I Got It?
This is one of the most challenging years for me as I am learning to grow from a standalone low income family. The limitation itself is me spending most of my life doing community college. Of course, I was on the right path, but I had to push beyond this super average and boring life, so I scouted for more and more on top of my study and major discovery of the investment world. I got myself under various mentorships, especially Martin Shkreli, who actually got me inspired to learn deeper into the world of investments and how everything worked in technicality. A whole new phase, just me putting my head down to my books, reaching out to people, and scavenging the slightest thin possibilities in making it to the top. Along the way, I still had people around supporting me, and I am forever grateful for them being there at the year of my teenage struggle. At least, the cool milestone here is when I made my first buy trade on a random biopharmaceutical stock, Genocea Biosciences. It was a horrible purchase lol.

The Year of "Trying to Figure It Out"
I spent most of this year in full struggle managing between my study and setting goals as high as I could reach to push me back on track, because I truly felt behind. And with all the blessings I got, I landed on a scholarship to enter college, which supported my family significantly, because we were financially limited being new in the US. I knew that I didn't want to stack more responsibility on my dad. And I held it dearly to myself in finding “how do people make it successfully in the US”. I looked thoroughly among the actual top 1% of successful people, and it honestly comes from enormous grit and power. Hence, I found the world of investment! Funny enough, I do realize how Warren Buffett as a figure had influenced me in this space, but actually, the main figure was Bill Gates. He was such a legend in managing his portfolio behind the work at Microsoft. I then doubled down to major in both accounting and finance.

A Blurry First Year in the US
One year in the US, and life for sure was in absolute blurry mode. Because it really took the time to learn how people talk or find the right friends as I was catching up mid high school. So, I decided to not put such high expectations out of this year. Most of the time, if I wasn't hanging out with church friends, you'd find me studying my ass off at the library. And also! This is where I was at peak ambition to understand where I want to be in life, because all goals from Indonesia were in full reset. I'd keep spending my nights thinking about how to make the best out of life from this side of the world.

Picking a Solid Path, Then Leaving It All Behind
I ended up making it to my junior high, making a decisive but unpopular choice to get into the IPS route (it is the route focused on social study, but I mainly chose it because it has the option to focus on going into the business study). I made the ultimate decision to get into the business career route! So, I guess that's a goodbye to physics and art lol. Even though I still joined up some clubs or hung out with people who love to sketch or watch anime and stuff. But hey, anime turned out to be the legendary part that shaped my life here. I then went all out getting involved in all kinds of positive things like joining the publication club, nature club, and even running as the class president, etc. In parallel, I was super determined to get into accounting, as it happened to be the popular route with the highest demand and success rate in Indonesia, especially in the government sector, so I poured my heart into it. But then, all those aspirations went out the window as soon as we got the news that my dad was assigned to serve in the US, and I realized that this meant that life would have to be started all over again. And leaving all my amazing friends mid high school was the most heartbreaking part. So here are some of them saying goodbyes and sending me off before my family moved to the US. Then we landed at LAX and life here basically started over for me. And maaan, I don't even speak proper American English yet, and I start right in the middle of the junior year, so what a blur! Good thing that the church people my dad worked with were all super nice and supportive in helping me with everything. In the midst of all this, I actually feel that God is truly allowing me to see life from this new perspective.

Thriving as a High School Freshman, but Split in Three Ways
High school freshman started out amazing. New people and environment that gave me a close-knit bond and space to find myself. I actually thrived instead of underperforming like when I was in middle school. Most of the memorable part here is focused on the amazing friends that I met who turned out to be mad funny and like-minded with me, especially in all of my aspirations and skills, but I was ultimately divided in choosing where I wanted to put my interests in animation, physics, and money math, because we ultimately had to pick a path to choose.

Wrapping Middle School
Lifelong friends, with amazing and mad funny stories, and maxed teenage growth potential all on the positive side, I think that's how I wrapped middle school here. Absolutely vibrant and full of character. But then, this is also the year I moved up to high school, SMA Santo Thomas 2 Medan. So everything was basically new again in terms of friends and where I want to put responsibility in my mixed interests. I just heard that high school would be the best life part in any teenage experience in general.

I Developed Three Life Interests, and School Friends Were Legendary
Middle school turned out to be fun and cool. Mostly because of the friends I got there that made each day feel full and uplifting. I think this is my most unserious state in my life, but if I want to talk about the serious part, this is where I developed my interest in physics, animation, and money! Totally confusing and separate interests to be in, but what the hell.

Welcome Middle School!
This is the year where I started middle school at SMP Santo Thomas 1. I think it was one of the high end Catholic schools in Medan with a great success rate of alumni. Hence, getting here meant my teenage years might somewhat be more serious. But tbh, I don't even think that I was a serious person at all here, though I wasn't performing that great either. I know that I made some amazing friends and experiences though!

Growing Up as an Indonesian Kid
My German side truly slipped away as I grew up over these years until I was almost entirely in an Indonesian state, personality and language-wise. As far as I remember, this is the stage where I actually gained full control of real consciousness rather than being an NPC kid lol. This is also where my schooling started. I went to elementary school at SD Swasta Katolik Assisi Medan. And starting at a Catholic school truly built the discipline and most of the personality I still run on until today, and I am forever grateful for how I grew up in this environment. Sadly, my mom passed away in 2004 because of a devastating car accident that left our family in shambles. We moved to live with our other relatives, and I changed school to SD Santo Thomas 2, another Catholic school, to live closer to our new home.

Learning to Be an Indonesian From the Huta
We lived in Tarutung for a while, a town in North Sumatra, before moving to Medan city. Medan is where my dad ultimately served as an HKBP pastor and a dedicated professor at Universitas HKBP Nommensen. For me, this is when I began kindergarten to then starting elementary school. The odd part is that I spoke German and Bataknese, which is the native North Sumatran language, before I could really speak Indonesian. So I had to catch up to a place I already lived in, but that was the struggle as a kid haha.

Indonesia Became Home
This is the year my whole family moved back to Indonesia, and Indonesia became home. We also brought back some German friends and family serving and living around the rural areas of North Sumatra. Also, it's when my little brother, Joy, was born in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra.

Going Around Europe, but Germany Is the Temporary Home
On top of being a pastor, my dad was also a theology professor. He dedicated his life to serving around the world, and in these years he was working under the Lutheran World Federation, in affiliation with HKBP. With Germany as our home base area to serve, but also around the rest of Europe.

Born to the Most Amazing Family I Could Ask For
I was born to two amazing Indonesian parents who were on a life journey in Germany. My dad is a pastor and he was serving all around Europe at the time, and my mom was an amazing housewife who took care of that full life.
